A story about myself?

My name is Cody Ames and as you might guess I am the owner, bookeeper moral officer and anything else I need to be here at Cody’s Consulting. As I have designed this site I have to admit that this is the hardest part for me to do.  Writing about yourself is not something most people do easily and I am included in that group.  I don’t find myself to be paricularly interesting but I will give it a shot.  :)
When I was 3 1/2 years old I broke my leg and when I was about 4 I fell and split my forehead open, a scar I carry to this day.  Wait, what bearing does this have on the current day?  None that I can think of but I figured I had to start somewhere and besides, is a good ice(and bone) breaker.  Okay okay, I will quit stalling and get to it.
I think I have always been pulled towards technology.  When I was a boy my dad was a computer tech for a local computer repair company.  I remember from a young age he would let me tag along and help as much as I could.  My fate was sealed then to forever be a computer geek(not nerd, I will differentiate that below).  Since then I have always been messing with computers.  As soon as I was able to afford my own computer I had one.  I can not thank my dad enough for fixing his computer every time I messed it up  :) .  Once I had my own computer I was also on my own to fix any problems that I caused, which is probably what started me on my path to here.
In 2004 I, along with a few hundred other people, were layed off when Sykes Enterprises closed their office here.  As I was sitting around on unemployment, trying to decide what to do next, a friend of mine came to me and said he wanted to start his own computer repair/consultation business and asked if I would join him.  Since I was already doing this for my family/friends it made sense to do it and get paid for it as well.
Well in the years that have followed my friend and I have split ways and we each operate our own independant businesses.  I have to say I enjoy being self employed much more than I ever enjoyed working for somebody else.  I mean who doesn’t like to get paid whenever you want to, instead of having to wait two weeks.  I pay more taxes now than I ever have in my life but I do not think I could go back to a 8-5 job again.  There is just this undescribable feeling to run your own successfull business and have your name be on all of the checks.  Yes I said it, the checks.  Sure I enjoy my work but we all have jobs to make money.  If we didn’t need to make money why would we deal with the stress? Simple, we wouldn’t.
You will also notice above that I did not say I was my own boss.  The way I see it everytime my phone rings I have a new boss.  Sure I could decide to decline the business but how smart would that be?  So I end up working harder now than I ever had to in the past.  When you work a normal 8-5 job you are not expected to work weekends, nights or any odd hours.  You also have to be given breaks in certain intervals, not so when
self employed.  With a normal job you can expect to work around 40 hours per week.  When self employed you work as much as you have to.  If that means spending your whole weekend fixing a serious problem so the client can be up and going on Monday morning, then so be it.
Most would think my working such crazy hours might hinder my personal life.  Well in most cases it probably would but I have the most amazing and understanding woman in my life that I could ever have.  Grace is so much like me yet so much different at the same time.  She is my sounding board for new ideas, my pressure vent for those crazy weeks and my voice of reason.  I have no problem saying that she is far smarter and wiser than myself and I trust her judgement completely.  She brings a stable and calm head to any situation I might have.  She helps me put perspective on decisions I have to make and see things from other, not so obvious angles.

Okay well I guess I will get back to myself and see if I can wrap this up.  I would say apart from technology I have some pretty interesting yet odd hobbies.  I LOVE to take pictures and in fact, I think I am going to try to add it to my list of services here soon.  I also enjoy the outoors and love to go camping, fishing and gold prospecting.  Yes, you read that right, gold prospecting.  Most people do not picture me as a gold prospector due to my love to technology.  However, it is GREAT to get to the river and spend some time
working with 150 year old technology.  Also when you finish up for the day and you see that yellow “flash in the pan” it is a great feeling.  Still find it odd? Well try it sometime, you might change your mind.. :) .

I guess I will tackle the subject of geek vs nerd that I referenced above.  I feel a computer nerd is somebody who is socially inept and who’s only interest is computers.  They lack social skills, life experience and good hygiene.  A geek on the other hand is one who has an interest in nearly all things technical.  We do not have pocket protectors, we CAN interact with people and we DO shower regularly.  I ride a motorcycle for my work, when I can.  When was the last time you saw a nerd on a motorcycle?  :)

Well there you go, that is a bit of a rundown of myself and what makes myself tick.  I can imagine I’ll think of other items to add but for now I am going to get started on the other features of my site.  I will update the front page if/when I decide to make changes to this page.
