Moment of truth?

October 25th, 2008

Well as most of you can probably tell, I am an aspiring photographer.  I take my camera with me most everywhere and I take a lot of shots.  Over the last year I have put a lot of effort into producting nicer images and i think I have come a long way.  Well today is kind of the moment of truth, so to say, for my last years worth of work.

My dad has asked me to take pictures of him and my stepmother, which will probably be the pictures they display for the rest of their lives.  Well today is when that is going to happen and to say I am nervous, would be an understatement.  Sure I have a few strobes but do I have the skill to use them properly?  I’ve only used them to photograph people two times(one of those was shooting myself).

Before I go off to take pictures, I generally like to have a few ideas in my mind as to what I want.  My problem today is I have a hundred ideas in my head!   Trying to sort through them all will probably be near impossible challenging.  I plan on taking some safe, typical portrait shots first, that way I’ll at least have something good “in the bag” so I can try some other things later.

For those that are interested, I will probably post some pictures of the lighting setups I use.  I know I have learned a TON by reading strobist.com that I really like when you can see the actual lighting setup.

So here I am wishing myself good luck today, lol.  I’ll let you all know how it turns out.

We made it back…

October 5th, 2008

Well after 267 miles on the road today, we all got back safe and sound.  We had a great, if short, trip to the coast.  Even though it rained nearly constantly we had a GREAT time.

The picture above was one of the first from the trip.  This was a lovely little beach called Sunset beach.  It was very protected from the harsh seas and made for a great experience.  Grace and her son were still coming down from the car and I snapped this pic.  Pictures like that make this whole photography thing seem easy… :)

I really got to take some pictures which I really needed to take.  I also got break in my d90 which I dearely love now.  I took nearly 300 pictures, 32 of which I have uploaded to my gallery here. As I go through the pictures a second time, I am sure I will be posting more.

I’m gone!

October 3rd, 2008

In a few hours Grace, her son and myself will be leaving for the coast.  It is just a quick weekend trip but … it’s the coast! :)   I am sure I’ll have PLENTY of pictures to share on here.  I Will probably have to make a new gallary at my photo site.  In the meantime, feel free to check out the pictures there and on my eyefetch page.

See ya!

Autumn is here…

Fall colors #1

Well the seasons have changed and the crisp mornings of Autumn have arrived.  It almost feels unreal that summer is gone so quickly.  While this time of year is certainly beautiful, giving me seemingly endless views to point my camera at, I find myself wishing I could roll back time.  That is the one thing about time though, it doesn’t stop for anybody or anything.

Tulelake Fair

September 7th, 2008

Grace, her son and myself went down to the Tulelake fair yesterday where a good time was had by all.  After such a crazy week it was nice to slow down and just enjoy myself without the worries or stress of the upcomming week.  We ate tasty yet horrible for you food, drank gallons of lemonade and just had a great time.

For any of you who have not seen them, the Alaskan Racing Pigs is a fun show to watch.  I am not sure how close to Alaska these pigs have actually been but they sure can run!

Good lighting is FTW?

September 5th, 2008

So if you have checked out my photograpy links on the left, you will have already spent a mind numbing amount of time on strobist.com… you did go read it.. right?  Well I got myself a setup that David Hobby suggests to do off camera lighting.  I ordered a kit that included light stand, umbrella, wireless triggers and various other gizmos.  After wondering if the package would ever arrive, it finally did today!  The timing was actually good since a nearly hellish week is over and Grace had her Team Oregon class from 6-9pm tonight.  That left me hours of free time to just tinker with the setup and see what I could do.  :)

Capturing moments in time

September 1st, 2008

So imagine you are sitting around on a nice summer afternoon drinking lemonade with your friends and family.  Out of the house the boy comes running and excited screaming “You have to see this, look what I just learned to do!”  He looks around a moment and fixes his gaze on a motorcycle mirror and dashes over.  He motions with his hands and says “Come look” and he is concentrating on the mirror.  He opens his mouth and for the first time ever you see him roll his tongue, something which up until now was believed he could not do.
